Coming Out...Politically
Yesterday
Many politicians are reluctant to publicly support marriage equality because it can be potential political suicide, but there are still many who are not against it. There are also those who change their minds and "come out" publicly to support, and this is getting one step closer towards the equality movement.

Allies of Our Community
1/19/2010
Last week, the New Jersey Senate failed to pass a bill that would legalize marriage equality. I recently joined the millions of Americans who were told that the love they have for their significant others was not valid nor did it have a place in our society. While New Jersey does allow same-sex couples to enter civil unions (which lack many rights and privileges that marriage offers), it is ultimately a shame that I am not granted “life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness” in my state or country.

IN September 1998, David Buechner, then 39, a prominent classical pianist, came out as a transgender woman, explaining that from then on, she would live and perform as Sara Davis Buechner. The pianist had been accustomed to rave reviews (at 24, David, in his New York City concert debut, was called “an extraordinary young artist” by a New York Times critic). As a child, Kerry Bell dreamed of growing up to become a policeman -- both a police officer and a man.

A Boy and His Flag
12/1/2009
Will Phillips isn't like other boys his age.
For one thing, he's smart. Scary smart. A student in the West Fork School District in Washington County, he skipped a grade this year, going directly from the third to the fifth. When his family goes for a drive, discussions are much more apt to be about Teddy Roosevelt and terraforming Mars than they are about Spongebob Squarepants and what's playing on Radio Disney.
It was during one of those drives that the discussion turned to the pledge of allegiance and what it means. Laura Phillips is Will's mother. “Yes, my son is 10,” she said. “But he's probably more aware of the meaning of the pledge than a lot of adults. He's not just doing it rote recitation. We raised him to be aware of what's right, what's wrong, and what's fair.”

Coming Out in Middle School
9/28/2009
A few years ago, when I first heard from educators that young adolescents were coming out of the closet, I visited a middle school in Northern California where three eighth graders (a gay boy named Justin and two heterosexual girls, Alison and Amelia) took me on a tour of the school. They wanted to show me how many students were gay, bisexual or “confused,” but they wanted to do it discreetly — or as discreetly as middle-schoolers can.
